The Estes Park Wool Market - Fiber Arts Classes and More!

Category: Events

The Estes Park Wool Market isn’t until June, but if you want to attend you should make your plans soon, especially if you will be coming in from out of state. Estes Park isn’t huge, and hotels fill up fast in the summer since the town is the gateway to the Rocky Mountain National Park.

This year’s event will be held from June 12-15. On Thursday and Friday, a huge variety of workshops will be held in almost every type of fiber art you can think of. There will be classes in weaving, spinning, dyeing, naalbinding, knitting, felting and crochet. I’ve already signed up for two classes: A World of Color - Yarn Design which will cover color theory, fiber blending, and yarn design, and Mix It Up - Fiber Blending 101, which will cover fiber blending with both hand cards and drum carders. If you’re interested, you can download the workshop information and registration form to learn more. I’m very excited about the workshops - although I’ve attended the wool market several times, this will be my first time taking a class there.

Even if you can’t attend the workshops on Thursday and Friday, Saturday and Sunday are also great days to go to the wool market. Those of you that are animal lovers might be interested in the sheep dog exhibitions (one of my favorite things) or the llama, goat or sheep shows. And, those of you that are interested in the fiber arts might like to enter the handspun yarn contest or the sheep to shawl contest.

And of course, one of the best parts of the Estes Park Wool Market is the market itself. When I’ve gone in the past, there have been a huge variety of vendors, selling almost anything you could think of related to the fiber arts. You’ll be able to find raw fleece and prepared fibers, yarn, spinning wheels, spindles, hand carders, drum carders, and finished goods such as sweaters and tapestries. The picture to the left is a sample of the goodies that were acquired last year by Miss Violet of Lime & Violet fame.

Estes Park is a beautiful place, and the Estes Park Wool Market is probably one of the best fiber shows in the western U.S. Hope to see you there this summer!
