Spinning Wheels
Once spinning becomes a serious hobby for you, you may want to consider buying a spinning wheel. The advantage of a spinning wheel over a hand spindle is that most spinners can spin quite a bit faster and with greater consistency on a spinning wheel than a spindle.
EBay is a great source for spinning wheels. You can even find antique spinning wheels for sale on eBay occasionally.

Paradise Fibers is another great place to buy a spinning wheel. If you don’t find what you’re looking for on eBay, take a look at their collection. They typically have Ashford, Babe, Lendrum, Kromski and Louet spinning wheels for sale.
When deciding which spinning wheel is right for you, you should consider:
- The type of yarn you want to spin. If you want to be able to spin a variety of yarns, you should make sure the wheel has multiple drive wheel ratios available. Wheels with higher drive ratios will allow you to spin finer yarns more easily.
- How important portability is to you. Several spinning wheel manufacturers make wheels that are designed to fold up for easy portability, but often, portable wheels are less stable and can be harder to spin on.
- The treadle – wheels come in single-treadle (designed to be used with one foot) or double-treadle models (designed to be used with two feet). Some manufacturers make both types. Neither is necessarily better; which you should choose just depends on what’s most comfortable for you.
- Included accessories – Some wheels come with straps and bags to help you transport the wheel more easily, lazy kates, and extra bobbins and whorls, while others have few included accessories.
